** spoiler alert ** I did not know what to expect from this book, as the summary does not give away too much, which is a good thing! The story starts like a very disturbing thriller, but soon some supernatural elements are interwoven, adding another dimension. It was hard to witness just how much brutality and cruelty Jessie had to endure, and the author did a great job showing us Jessie's feelings and thoughts during her torment, which added to the uneasiness.

I often wondered why Jessie did not find a way to break out of her miserable life, and how people could act in such extreme ways in the first place, but it really made sense later on when we learn that some greater force had a finger in the pie (a funny expression for what I want to say, but this is what my dictionary told me to write...).

I am not a fan of stories including angels, demons and any kind of "bible-stuff", and those chapters were my least favorite, but fortunately FRIENDS does not make the mistake to raise a moral finger. It merely borrows some subjects to form an original background for the story. I liked both the book's concept of Lucifer and the premise that the bible was made up to steerhumanity's

believes and fears. At first I thought the plot became too crowded when yet another storyline was added to the already complex events, which others may have used for a sequel instead of appending directly. But on the other hand, it kept me busy guessing what would come next, and I sure was never bored, as the book does not have any superfluous filler text, which can be a danger with

serieses. While some twists seemed far-fetched and appeared convenient for the continuation of the story, at the end everything falls into place and it all works out nicely. Friends in Dark Corners is an extraordinary original story definitely worth reading.(I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review)

Friends in Dark Corners by Jill H. O'Bones is a must read! It is a very original story about a girl named Jessie Smith. Jessie has had many near death experiences...too many. When Jessie is awake she is tormented by family and school, and when she is asleep she is tormented in her dreams. There are so many parts of this story that the author wants us to see the world from Jessie's own eyes...and with all of the details and fluid wording, I did. It was like a movie playing. Her writing describes all of Jessie's senses (not just sight) so vividly. I couldn't wait to read what was going to happen next. If you like suspense, paranormal, mystery....it's all here. I would love to see a sequel! By the way, Jill H. O'Bones has three previous novels, The Vow series, A Vow of Tears: The First Vow, A Vow of Deception: The Second Vow, and A Vow of Fate: The Final Vow---which I enjoyed very much also. I was offered this book for an honest review.

Brilliant! Nothing like I have read before

I am so glad I met Maxine another reading buddy of mine online. She was the one that introduced me to this author. It seemed a bit dark for me, but boy oh boy was I glad I contacted this author and took the chance. I would have sorely missed out on a very well written book like no other I have read in a long time.

Jessie had a difficult birth, she was know as the death child. I found that a horrid way for her Grandfather to be towards her let alone others in her family. The cruelty she endured throughout her life and school life was horrible. The author hasn't gone into great detail. Whether this is in the respects for the reader or she felt it didn't need to be elaborated, I am not sure, but what I do know is, I did read between the lines.

Jessie comes close to death seven times.

Jessie has a hard time remembering exactly what has happened to her so, when she wakes up from a coma, which was many years later she was shocked! Shocked to find how many years she had been laying there.

She dreams of 'terrors' 'nightmares' and a chap named Dean who seems to always be there to keep her safe.

A doctor suggested she used an imaginary door to walk through in her dream to 'escape' the awful terrors that grip her.

There were a lot of 'flashbacks' in this story which was fine for me to follow, however, when the Supernatural element came in I did start to become a bit twittery as anything like that gives me the goose bumps BIG TIME, so I gritted my teeth and knew this was to be read as it was relevant to the storyline.

Trouble is, I got a little lost at times. Eventhough I got lost it didn't take long to find my way home and back to making sense somewhat to what was happening to Jessie.

4Great plot, intriguing - add a tocuh of the supernatural/paranormal!

This book had so many surprises in it for the reader, from where it began to where it ended up was a journey indeed. Very interesting plot that I was not expecting from the blurb about this book. It's one you need to read with an open mind and no expectations in my opinion. Don't decide you know what it's about.

The book starts with the story of Jessie, from her difficult birth through her younger years, these are written as timeline flashbacks for the most part. Jessie's younger years are shadowed with cruelty and rejection from just about everywhere and she does not know why (really). She suffers the most awful bullying at school and callous cruelty from her own siblings and family. It's pretty dark for poor Jessie, I felt immensely sorry for her.

In the present day Jessie wakes up out of a coma and has to piece back together herself, her body and her mind. Things she is scrambling to remember, she is not being told just yet what has happened to her, the staff at the care hospital not feeling she is ready. One thing that she can remember from being younger is what she calls the "terrors" awful nightmares where she can't escape. She is reminded by the kind doctor in the home of how she can use an image of walking through a door to escape them. She is still terrified of the "terrors" getting her. I would be too. She has a friend on the other side of this dream door "Dean" who plays an important role in her safety.

I don't want to share too much of the story because beyond this the book really takes twists and turns that you must read for yourself. The book starts to weave in some supernatural elements that I did not see coming AT ALL for the first half of the book. It's really surprising when it comes along. I enjoyed some aspects of this, but found other aspects confusing, it was not hugely clear what was going on. But it was enjoyable reading and I was keen to see what the outcome was.

We follow Jessie as she begins her new life, she has a new found love of nature and a very special connection with the animals that live in the trees around her new home. I really liked the animal connection element of the book, whilst a tad unusual, I really liked it.

Jessie forms a friendship with a young autistic boy that she helps one day who in non-verbal, she is able to bring out the best in him and also becomes friendly with the boys mother, these are really her only new friends in her new life. Her family have turned away from her and she's kind of alone at this point.

THEN the whole supernatural, paranormal aspect of things really kicks in and got my head in a spin, it's not obvious where it's heading through the book, there are snippets of things she sees at certain times but no indicator of what they mean, the author does a good job of keeping the reader in the dark, it's almost impossible to guess the outcome of this book no matter how hard you try.

I liked the supernatural element of the story at the end but found I was a touch confused and had to read over a few paragraphs more than once to get clarity on what was going on. This is really my only criticism of the entire book. It's very well written, the characters are well done, the plot is interesting and well paced, it's a good, enjoyable read. I just wish the whole element around the "other realms" aspect was a touch more crystal clear for me as a reader.

3.5 stars from me for this great and unusual book, if you like a book that surprises you, this will certainly do that. If you like a book that merges with some supernatural and paranormal elements, this will give you that. Very interesting reading.

I received a copy of this book thanks to the author in exchange for a fair and honest review. Many thanks.

4love, etc

Friends in Dark Corners by Jill H. O'Bones has a mix of horror, mystery, hope, supernatural, friendship, love, etc. etc. At first it seemed like the book was going to mainly be about the abuse a child (Jessie) experiences throughout her entire life from everyone around her. As the story continues the reason for the treatment she has received all of her life is revealed as well as how Jessie deals with those revelations. There were a few grammatical errors in the copy I received but otherwise it was a pretty good story. I would have liked to have had a bit more closure on some parts of the story but possibly there is a sequel in the works that will solve that.
